Frequently Asked Questions

Did you know that the most popular VPN review site is actually owned by the same company that owns four huge VPN services? And that many other review sites simply promote the providers that make earn them the most money? Our site impartially shows VPN costs. We list the features of these providers. We don't offer reviews to try to sway you to purchase our favorite money maker. The data speaks for itself.

What is the VPNCosts Index?

One of the biggest problems with how VPN providers price their services is that they all have different, confusing plans.

Many providers will try to lock you in to long term plans with crazy low signup offers, then raise the price by up to 300%. Others offer 3 free months when you signup for 2 years, but charge you extra for those 'free months'.

Our VPNCosts Index calculates the average price that an average buyer will pay for their VPN monthly. We take into consideration how many people purchase 1 month, 12 month, 24 month and other plans. We also consider how long the average customers keeps their VPN subscription.

How do I know you don't just promote the VPN provider that earns you the most money?

Don't get us wrong - some VPN providers earn us more revenue than others - quite a lot more. Since we focus on VPN Costs, then there really isn't any way to send these providers to the top of the list.

We show VPN pricing multiple ways to allow visitors to see which provider is best for them, based upon how long they want to use the service, and if they'd like to prepay for longer to lower monthly costs.

Which VPN provider is better for me?

The reality is that all VPN providers listed are ones that we would gladly use every day. They all are excellent choices for tens of millions of subscribers. They are all reliable, offer hundreds to thousands of servers, provide geolocations for streaming, a strict no-log policy and a money back guarantee.

You may experience minor speed slowdowns when using local VPN locations and higher slowdowns when using remote locations (logically). Sometimes you may get temporarily blocked or need to complete additional Captchas when browsing through a VPN, though this can be remedied by upgraded to a dedicated IP address.

What if I have problems using my VPN?

Every provider we list offers 24x7 technical support. Some offer email, others offer helpdesk, still more will provide live chat and a small select few offer phone support.

We recommend you find a provider that offers live chat at a minimum and suggest you connect with live chat before making your purchase to check out the quality of support. With all providers there will be times of fast support and others of slow support, as well, you can get a rockstar support technician or a newbie that is learning the support ropes.

Can you explain the 5-eyes, 9-eyes and 14-eyes alliances?

The 5-eyes, 9-eyes, and 14-eyes alliances are international surveillance and intelligence-sharing arrangements between various countries. The 5-Eyes alliance includes the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and is the most well-known, with its roots in post-World War II cooperation.

The 9-Eyes alliance adds Denmark, France, the Netherlands, and Norway, while the 14-Eyes alliance includes these nine countries plus Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Sweden. These alliances facilitate extensive sharing of surveillance data and intelligence among member nations, which can have implications for privacy and security.

Should I worry about VPN providers in the 5-eyes, 9-eyes and 14-eyes alliances?

For VPN providers that adhere to a strict "no logging" policy, the jurisdiction of these alliances becomes less relevant. No logging means that the VPN service does not keep any records of users' internet activity, connectivity data, or personal information.

Even if law enforcement or government agencies from 5-Eyes, 9-Eyes, or 14-Eyes countries demand access to logs, these providers have no data to hand over. This commitment to no logging ensures that user privacy is maintained, irrespective of the legal or surveillance obligations of the country in which the VPN provider is based.
